Rules Summary

Puzz Original is the house variant at Puzz.com. It's legally and structurally distinct from Scrabble, Words With Friends, Wordfeud, and Lexulous — we own the tile distribution, the premium square layout, and the branding. The 107-tile bag has 4 blank tiles (instead of the usual 2), which doubles the strategic blank-tile opportunities and makes the late game dramatically different from classic Scrabble.

The Ring-pattern premium square layout arranges 8 Triple Word Score squares around the outer edge, 12 Double Word Score squares in a middle ring, 12 Triple Letter Score squares in an inner ring, and 20 Double Letter Score squares scattered throughout — plus the center Double Word Score. This creates different scoring hotspots than Classic Scrabble's cross layout, rewarding different opening patterns and end-game strategies.

Tile Distribution & Values

Puzz Original uses a 107-tile bag with 4 blank tiles. Point values and counts for each letter are enforced by the game server from src/game/variants.js — the same source of truth the matchmaker uses when constructing a new game room.

Board Layout

15×15 Ring pattern: 8 TW outer, 12 DW middle ring, 12 TL inner ring, 20 DL scattered, center DW. Premium squares only trigger on the turn a new tile is placed — covering an already-used premium square again does not re-trigger it.

Strategy Tips

Tip 1 — The 4-blank advantage. With 4 blanks in the bag (vs 2 in Classic), you're much more likely to draw a blank during the game — and it's genuinely common to hold 2 blanks at once. Blank tiles are worth 0 points but let you substitute any letter, making them the most flexible tiles in the game. Use the extra blanks for bingos, tricky consonant plays, and filling the Q-without-U gap.
Tip 2 — Ring layout rewards outer plays. Classic Scrabble rewards plays along the diagonals (where the DW squares are). Puzz Original's Ring layout puts the DW squares in a middle ring, so long plays from the center toward any edge often cross multiple premium squares. Practice plays like MIRROR or PATTERN that span 6+ squares and hit 2-3 premium squares at once.
Tip 3 — Center star is still DW. The center square (7,7) is a Double Word Score in the Ring layout, same as Classic. The opening move that covers it should still be a long word that extends into the ring of DW squares for maximum opening-turn score.
Tip 4 — Speed Round uses this layout. The 60-second Speed Round variant at puzz.com runs on the Puzz Original 107-tile Ring board, not Classic. If you want to practice Speed Round, play regular Puzz Original first to learn the Ring layout before adding the 60-second time pressure.
