The Z Tile: Maximum Value, Limited Flexibility
Z ties with Q for the highest tile value in Scrabble at 10 points. But unlike Q (which has multiple Q-without-U words), Z has only one 2-letter word: ZA. This makes Z less flexible than X for parallel plays but more valuable per play when you can land it on a premium square.
There are two Z tiles in the standard Scrabble bag. Drawing both is rare but incredible — JAZZ (29 points face value) and PIZZA (25 points) become possible. Knowing the full Z word list means you're never stuck holding 10 dead points.
2-Letter Z Words (1 word)
ZA — Informal for pizza. Your only 2-letter Z word and your emergency valve for tight boards. ZA parallel to any word containing A gives you a cross-word, but the limited pairing means Z parallel plays are rarer than X parallel plays.
3-Letter Z Words (15 essential)
ZAX is the crown jewel of 3-letter Z words at 19 face points (Z=10, A=1, X=8). It's a tool for cutting roofing slates, and it uses both Z and X in a single word — incredible efficiency. If you ever hold both Z and X, ZAX is almost always the right play.

Z Scoring Strategy
Premium Square Priorities
Z's 10-point value means premium squares multiply it harder than any other tile:
- Z on TLS: 30 points for the tile alone. ZA on TLS = 31. ZAP with Z on TLS = 34.
- Z on DWS: The whole word doubles. ZAP on DWS = 28.
- Z on TWS: The whole word triples. Even ZA on TWS = 33.
When to Play Z
- Premium square available: Play immediately. Z on a TLS is worth more than most 5-letter words.
- No premium, but can form ZAX: Play it. 19 face points without any multiplier is still excellent.
- No premium, tight board: ZA parallel to a word containing A. Even a modest ZA scores 11+ points and clears Z from your rack.
- Endgame with Z stuck: Play ZA or any Z word immediately. Getting stuck with Z at game end is a 20-point swing (you lose 10, opponent gains 10).
Z + Blank Strategy
If you hold Z plus the blank tile, consider using the blank as a second Z for double-Z words (JAZZ, FIZZ, BUZZ). The blank sacrifice is worth it when the double-Z word lands on a premium square — JAZZ on DWS = 58, which justifies burning a blank.
