Why 3-Letter Words Win Games
Long words get the glory, but 3-letter words win the war. On a crowded board where 7-letter bingos can't fit, a well-placed 3-letter word on a Triple Letter Score or Double Word Score can outscore a 5-letter word played in the open. They're also essential for parallel plays — laying a word alongside an existing one, forming multiple 2- and 3-letter words simultaneously.
The key insight: not all 3-letter words are created equal. ZAX scores 19 points on face value alone — before any premium squares. Compare that to THE at 6 points. Knowing which short words hit hardest lets you squeeze maximum value out of tight positions.

Parallel play bonus: When you lay a 3-letter word parallel to an existing word, you form multiple words simultaneously. Each new 2-letter combination scores separately. A parallel ZAX next to an existing word can easily score 35-50+ points total.

When to Reach for a 3-Letter Power Word
- The board is locked down. No open lanes for 5+ letter words? A ZAX on a premium square outscores most longer plays.
- You're setting up a parallel. Lay JAW alongside existing tiles to form JA + AW + WE (or whatever the adjacency creates). Each sub-word scores independently.
- You need to dump a power tile. Holding Z, X, J, or Q late in the game is risky. A quick 3-letter word gets the points on the board and out of your rack.
- Endgame tile tracking. If you know the remaining tiles, a precise 3-letter word on a premium square can be the exact margin you need.
Study method: Group these words by their power tile (Z, J, X, Q) rather than alphabetically. In a real game, you'll think "I have a Z — what are my Z words?" not "what words start with Z?" The groupings above match how your brain works during play.
