Nietzsche stated 'what does not kill me only serves to make me stronger.' The > symbol was used to indicated that if you survived the items listed (poison, noose, sword, knife, pistol, etc.), in effect being greater than they are, then a lowercase you becomes a stronger uppercase and boldface YOU.
